Monthly book club-style Bible study or theological reflection and fellowship. Fall 2008 – reading Randy Pausch’s The Last Lecture. Before leaving Carnegie Mellon as a computer science professor, Pausch gave a lecture, entitled “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” This was his last lecture, a chance for him to speak on those things most important to him. Pausch died this summer after a battle with cancer. The Last Lecture evokes such questions as: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? Pausch’s lecture wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have...and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. Young adults from the parish are invited to join us! Nursery care provided upon request. A Bit about Canterbury … The Episcopal Canterbury Fellowship at MSU ("Canterbury") is the organization of Episcopal students on the campus of Mississippi State University and invites you to participate in its programs and offerings at any time! Students from across the Diocese of Mississippi, neighboring states and elsewhere attend MSU and find Canterbury to be a place to make friends seeking to deepen their faith experience. Canterbury meets regularly with plans ranging from a traditional worship service to an open discussion of a significant topic of the day, to watching movies and sharing a community meal to having fun. Music is a part of our gatherings as often as possible, and eager musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments. * We are currently seeking musicians. If interested, please contact the chaplain. * Canterbury gatherings are held throughout the year, whenever MSU is in session (fall, spring and summer terms). Please see above schedule for current meeting times and other special events. The Canterbury group is guided by the Episcopal Chaplain at MSU, the Rev. J. Brian Ponder, who helps bring parish-based campus ministry to Mississippi State University in addition to regular “Canterbury” gatherings. Long an important part of the parish and diocese's work, Canterbury has become connected in many ways to various activities and responsibilities within the life of Church of the Resurrection. Students serve on the Search and Servant Ministries committees, as liaison to the Vestry, and are involved in Parish stewardship and the liturgical life of the church as lectors, altar guild members, youth coordinators and leaders, choristers, musicians and Lay Eucharistic Ministers. Students and parish members get to know one another as both friends and mentors. In addition to weekly meetings, some of Canterbury's activities in recent years have included: Hosting a Canterbury Forum Renovating a meeting house, The Canterbury Lodge, on the church property Organizing a Rummage Sale to Benefit local and global Servant Ministries Offering a Holy Week Labyrinth experience on campus Hosting a Concert and Coffee House event to Send Local Kids in need to Summer Camp Attending the Annual Council of the Diocese of Mississippi Attending the Consecration of Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori in November 2006 Attending Archbishop Rowan Williams’ visit to New Orleans in November 2007 Participating in the Annual Parish Spring Cleaning Attending and staffing Vocare and Happening Reunion weekends Serving as staff and permanent staff members for Camp Bratton-Green Summer Sessions and/or Winter Solstice Activities where students enjoy fellowship with one another and parishioners Forming a Canterbury Advisory Council of Canterbury students and parishioners to plan for future programs Participating in a Habitat for Humanity House Building venture Delivering Food Baskets to Nursing Home Residents at Thanksgiving Purchasing and delivering Angel Tree gifts at Christmas Supporting and Attending the Institute of Interfaith Dialog annual dinner at MSU Volunteering for a Local Food Gleaning Ministry And LOTS MORE!
