MARTHA'S GUILD will meet August 6th in the Student Center for brown bag lunch and fellowship. New members are always welcome. ADOPTED FAMILIES - As a congregation we are thinking about back to school. Our adopted families are excited too, but it would make such a difference if we could help them with some of the more expensive but necessary items: Family C - Three children, all boys, ages 13, 10 and 4 years. Three age-appropriate back packs would be wonderful. Two of the boys go to Alexander School down Old West Point Road and their uniform is Khaki and Navy Blue. Sizes and clothes would include Size 12 slim pants and 14 shirts, shoe size 5 _; Size 32 pants and 18 shirts, shoe size 9. For the little chap at Head Start size 4 clothes of any sort and a size 3 shoe. Main items needed for all children are: crayons, Kleenex, round tip Fiscar scissors, paper towels, washable markers, Elmers glue, construction paper, band aids, erasers, rulers, dictionary, notebooks, pencils, 2-pocket folders, colored pencils, and hand sanitizer (not soap). A comprehensive list of clothing and school supplies is posted in the Narthex. If you would like to participate in helping our adopted children, choose what you would like to contribute from the printed list and remove the corresponding sticky label from the board in the Narthex. We ask that all back-to-school gifts be returned to the church by Friday, August 3rd. If you have questions please do not hesitate to contact either Jane Jenkins 324-3144 or David Foote 320-4777. GREETINGS FROM JOEL July 2001 Dear Friends at Resurrection, I am beginning my third week of full-time work as Artistic Director of the American Pianists Association and feel that I am, at last, "at home", and greatly enjoying all that I do. Each day brings its fair share of challenges, but I arrive at the office full of energy and enthusiasm and go home feeling satisfied with the accomplishment. It has become increasingly clear to me and everyone else that this was, indeed, the right job for me and I am grateful for the opportunity to work with an organization whose mission and my vision are so closely aligned. APA has the potential and the resources to do many things and I am thrilled to be a part of the organization at this time. Indianapolis, like APA, has become a comfortable place very quickly. I bought a marvelous loft/condominium with soaring ceilings and windows in an historic building (1870), in an historic redeveloped city-center neighborhood, with art galleries, shops, restaurants, theaters, and the like nearby. Christ Church Cathedral, with its fabulous Choir of Men and Boys and its three superb organs, is four blocks away. While the street traffic is somewhat more than my White Drive location in Starkville, and the pedestrian traffic considerably more diverse, I love where I live and smile every time I open the front door, whether going or coming. My fourteen years of work at the Church of the Resurrection were a blessing to me and provided a sense of direction, continuity and discipline to me during some very difficult years. I loved every minute of my time at the church and am thankful beyond measure for that opportunity to serve as organist/choirmaster. I can assure you that I would have been at a total loss without the church. Whatever frustrations or difficulties might have come my way, they all vanished once I started to play the processional hymn. After thirty-five years of playing for church, I am not sure what, if anything, will replace that special experience for me. And nothing will replace the joy I received serving as your organist/choirmaster. Thank you for all the kind gestures, generous - even extravagant - comments and gifts offered upon my departure. I think of you often, have confidence that the interim will be a time of reflection and growth for you, and look forward to visiting in your midst soon. David Johnson used to counsel me with the words "all in God's time." I am living proof that he was right. I wish you well and have much hope that our paths will cross often. - Joel Harrison JOEL'S ADDRESS is 706 Massachusetts Ave., No. 203, Indianapolis, IN 46204. Phone: 317-916-JOEL INTERIM REMINDER - The Rev. Murray Bullock has agreed to serve as our interim rector. He will be coming to Resurrection in September or October. We look forward to having Murray and his wife, Bobbie Sue with us! In the meantime, please call Sr. Warden, Leigh Jensen Crawford at 323-0567 or Jr. Warden Happy Deas at 324-5155 with needs and concerns. MANY THANKS to those who worked in the Church office while Nelda has taken some time off. Bob Anderson, Mary Eleanor Anderson, Jessica Callahan, Bill Boyd, Honey Johnston, Susie Owings, Melinda Myers, Mary Lee Beal, Gretchen Bell Simmons, Mary Frances Brady, Guy Hargrove, and Sherrie VanLandingham all took a turn. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - There is an opening for working with the newcomer welcoming committee. If you have ideas and are interested in working with newcomers, please call Jack Hollister at 324-0458 or Mary Eleanor Anderson at 323-3259 or rga1@ra.mssstate.edu. CONGRATULATIONS to Tommie and Don Zacharias on the birth of their granddaughter, Katherine Kline Zacharias in Boulder, Colorado. Kate's parents are Eric and Sara Zacharias and her brother is Luke. DEADLINES - Please help us get news and notices out in a timely fashion. Have your notices for the Sunday Bulletin in the office by Wednesday noon, and for the Newsletter by the 15th of the month. YOUR PRAYERS ARE ASKED FOR Leanne Fazio, Marlene Evans, Gretchen Passons, and LaVora Williams as they undergo treatment, and Janice Killebrew who is recovering from surgery. MEMORIALS were received last month for Mimi Gaines. LOOKING AHEAD...
