The Sunrise... Starkville, Mississippi November, 2001 Newsletter WORSHIP SCHEDULE During the renovations period all services will be held in the Parish Hall downstairs. Show your support by continuing to participate in our life and worship even when we are not in our usual worship space. As with the Hebrew people traveling through the wilderness, grumbling is to be expected. Your patience, flexibility and prayers are needed as we proceed through this period of transition toward renovation and a renewed community of faith. SUNDAY:
TUESDAY: WEDNESDAY:
5:30 p.m. - Canterbury Forum THURSDAY: ALL SAINTS DAY is Thursday, November 1st and the Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 5:30 p.m. On this Principal Feast day, we come together to express the intercommunion of the living and the dead in the body of Christ. Join us as we remember those who have gone before us that we might follow in their footsteps and strive to live godly lives, seeking and serving Christ in all people. PARKING PROTOCOL - A total switch is in order since the services have been moved "downstairs"! If you are able to do the stairs, feel free to park in the upper parking lot. This is especially true for families with young children in the nursery. Please leave the Merchants and Farmers parking places closest to the Parish Hall for those for whom walking a distance is a problem. Thanks. CHOIR WARMUPS - The choir will be warming up in the worship space from 10:00-10:15 each Sunday. Please enter quietly to say your prayers and prepare for worship. ACOLYTES/ LAY EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS will now vest in the room between the nursery and the Student Center, a.k.a the Canterbury Room. Please enter through the door by the Parking lot so as not to disturb the Sunday School class. Please arrive early to find this new spot! THANKSGIVING DAY SERVICE - Our traditional Thanksgiving Day Service has been transferred to the Eve of Thanksgiving, Wednesday, November 21st at 5:30 p.m. This scheduling change has been made in the hopes that folks will be free from doings with turkeys and bulldogs to gather for the celebration of the Great Thanksgiving. EYC has had a successful fall session and experienced growth in regular attendance in both the Jr Hi and Sr Hi EYC. Highlights in October include a gathering of 26 young people on the Drill Field for a huge game of Ultimate Frisbee and the slew of young adults who dressed up on the Sunday before Halloween to spread Halloween cheer and treats with the residents of Scribner's. EYC will continue to meet every Sunday night from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.. CANTERBURY NEWS - MSU Canterbury Episcopal Fellowship continues to meet weekly for services and fellowship. See Worship schedule for days and times. During renovations the Forum and Dinner will take place in the Scales House. Our Passionate Episcopalians for the forum on November 7th and November 14th are Nick Gault and Bob & Mary Eleanor Anderson, respectively. No Canterbury programs will be held during Thanksgiving week. All activities, except the forum, will resume for the last week of November through December 12th. VOCARE is a retreat similar to Happening and Cursillo for young adults ages 18 through 29. The weekend focuses on exploring one's personal spiritual journey and integrating one's identification with Christ into one's entire life. The upcoming Vocare will be held November 9-11 at Camp Bratton Green. Applications are available through the chaplain's office or on the Scales House bulletin board. SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE from John Beal: One of the first steps in the search process is the Parish Questionnaire. We have tabulated the responses and here is a brief summary of the results. Most of the people that responded are over 56 years old, married and have regularly attend the church for over 15 years. They all come strictly for religious purposes---To hear a good sermon, to receive Holy Communion, for spiritual growth, to participate in worship and in tradition of the Episcopal Church. The characteristics of the called priest reflect the same interest: Highly capable preacher, worship leader, counselor and available at crisis visiting. People also believe we are doing a good job. They believe we are a friendly parish that openly welcomes newcomers and visitors. They believe a strong relationship exists between clergy and laity (especially in time of need), we are conservative regarding variety of worship. And lastly we are divided on the issue of whether the church should address community and social problems. Our goals: Improve and continue, increase, enhance Christian Education making it a priority (children, EYC and Adult); continue to improve the Physical Plant including maintenance and improving visibility and cleanliness; continue a meaningful service; stress outreach and community involvement; continue to include college groups; improve monetary stewardship and increase members. RENOVATION COMMITTEE REPORT - Parish Hall kitchen and restrooms has been completed! Renovations to the Student Center, Student Center kitchen, old Sacristy, old Vesting area and nave has begun. This will include the completion of the new Sacristy, patching the plaster, painting the walls, and of course, upgrading the entire electrical system and replacing the heating and air conditioning system. These last two items, the electrical system and heating and air conditioning are hard to "see" but are vital to the life of the church and are very expensive! The nave, narthex and Student Center will all be painted and the floor in the Student Center refinished. New flooring will be put down in the kitchen, and a new stove installed. Hopefully this work will be completed by January, 2002. Those stained glass windows which have not already been refurbished will be removed by the middle of November and be reinstalled by June, 2002. ECW PLEDGE COFFEE - The ECW Pledge Coffee was a great success. Many thanks to Donna Stark for hosting the event this year. If you were unable to attend but would like to participate in the pledge drive, please drop a check made out to Episcopal Church Women in the collection plate or leave it in the church office. STEWARDSHIP KICKOFF DINNER - Mary Eleanor Anderson writes...Thank you to one and all who helped make the Stewardship Kickoff Event such a big success. Our thanks to Fr. Waldrep and the parishioners of St. Joseph's Catholic Church for offering their marvelous facility for our use. Thanks to the chairpersons: Grace and Craig Piper, wine and hors d'oeuvres; Kathy and Steven Brandon, auction items; Bill and Donna Stark, set up; Melinda and Dwayne Myers, cleanup; Beth and Bill Batson, decorations; and Jack Hollister, Auctioneer. A special thank you to Sherrie VanLandingham, who stepped in and finished the tasks when I became ill. Thanks also to Melanie Hollister, for preparation of the invitations, and Jack Hollister and Alyson Hardin who did multiple and various tasks. My sincere thanks to each person who worked and all of you who participated in order to make this a significant event in the life of our parish. This was an excellent example of our abilities to work and to play together for the bonding and solidarity of this parish family as we move through these days of transition. SILENT AUCTION - Over $5,000 was raised at the Silent Auction! Half of this amount will go to the Episcopal Relief and Development Fund, and the other half to the Capital Campaign. Many thanks to those who donated items and to those who bid and purchased said items! NEW CHURCH DIRECTORY IN THE WORKS - Are you new to Resurrection? Please make sure we have your current name, address, phone and email. Have you moved, changed your email address or phone number? If so, please notify Nelda at the church office 323-3483 or epchurch@netdoor.com or Ellen Newsom at wnewsom@netdoor.com. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES - We need four people each Sunday (two at each service) to be at the entrances to the church to remind people the services are now in the Parish Hall and to show visitors where the Parish Hall is located. If you are willing to get to church a little early and help with this important hospitality ministry, please contact Ellen Newsom wnewsom@netdoor.com. CONVOCATION NEWS - Tombigbee Convocation bids a fond farewell to the Rev. Liz Jones of St. Paul's, Corinth. Liz has been called to serve as rector of St. James, Greenville, and she and her family will be leaving our convocation at the end of November. Although her daughter Sarah, a student at MSMS, is still with us through her participation at the Wednesday evening Holy Eucharist. To our dean, the Very Rev. Shannon S. Johnston, and his wife, Ellen, we offer an extended welcome. They will not be leaving the diocese as of yet, but will remain at All Saints, Tupelo where ministries are flourishing. MANY THANKS to all who helped move and relocate! It was a huge undertaking and with lots of cheerful workers it went smoothly. Special thanks to Elizabeth who figured out how to use the Scales House effectively for meetings, Canterbury, Sunday School and temporary storage; and to Bobbe Sue Bullock for dressing up the Scales House entry with fall decorations. CHRISTIAN SYMPATHY is extended to Beth and Bill Batson and their family on the death of Beth's mother, Elizabeth Boling and to Lila Olson and her family on the death of her father, Lester Fox. "Rest eternal grant them , O Father, and let light perpetual shine upon them." Pray for all who mourn.
