EYC YEAR END PARTY is Sunday, May 5th from 5-7 at the church. Come for fun, mess and summer plans! The school year may be coming to a close, but the summer is nigh upon us. Let's make plans for a blast of events, after all Amanda Yates will be graduating in August so we need to wear her out while she still has time to PLAY!

ORGANISTS PRESENT MUSIC PROGRAM - Our own Leanne Fazio and Eric Daffron, organist at St. Paul's, will present a recital on May 5th at 5:00 p.m. at St. Paul's, Columbus. A reception will follow the concert at Eric's home. Come for lovely music and fellowship with our Columbus cousins. We hope to have a recital at Resurrection in the fall.

ST. MARTHA'S GUILD will meet May 6th at 12:30 p.m. in the "new" Student Center for brown bag lunch and fellowship. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

SECOND SUNDAY SHARING is May 12th. Share your bounty and bring non perishables for the food pantry.

CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES! We will celebrate Graduation Sunday on May 12th at the 10:30 service. A reception will follow in the Student Center. We have lots of graduates this year! Julia Cathcart, Greg Schuster, and Merrick Weidrich are graduating from Starkville High School; David Callahan and Angela Evans from Starkville Academy; Jack Allin, Chris and Elaine Brown from MSU, Rob Dodson from St. Andrews Episcopal School and Lylee Dodson from Vanderbilt. And of course, Lynn Barker is graduating from Sewanee. Good luck in all your future endeavors!

PENTECOST and FESTIVITIES is celebrated on Sunday, May 19th This is the "birth" day of the church, the day on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit and Jesus' commissioning of the disciples to go into the world. For those with children or others desiring Baptism, we will celebrate Holy Baptism at the 10:30 am service. Following that service, festivities will commence with a picnic by the pool. Come prepared for fun and fellowship, bring swim gear and a lawn chair, and plan to wear RED to signify the fire of the Holy Spirit!

UNITED THANK OFFERING - The UTO Spring in gathering will take place on Pentecost. All women of the church are reminded to bring their blue box offerings to either service. And everyone is invited to make an offering in a UTO envelop. Reminder letters with envelops will be mailed soon.

ORDINATION SATURDAY, MAY 25 - The ordination of Lynn Barker to the Diaconate is a big day for Lynn as well as for Resurrection! Lynn is the first postulant we have sent to seminary and we have the honor of having her ordination to the sacred order of deacons here in our church. Please plan to attend and celebrate with Lynn to show her how proud we are of her accomplishments. Following the service, all are invited to a luncheon in the Parish Hall. And we will be pleased to have Lynn serve as deacon at the Sunday services. Lynn will assume her duties as curate at Trinity Hattiesburg on July 1st.

NOTES FROM THE SENIOR WARDEN, MARY LEE BEAL: Stella Harrington is retiring after 12 faithful and dependable years of taking care of our babies and toddlers in the Nursery. Her last Sunday will be May 26th. Everyone, especially children, youth and parents, is invited to come to the nursery to honor her with a special reception following the 10:30 service that day. In the hopes of presenting Stella with a cash gift of gratitude, please make your check offerings payable to the Church of the Resurrection and mark it "Stella's Fund."

With Stella's retirement, the Vestry has directed the Worship and Christian Formation Commission to employ a person who meets the new job qualification guidelines. As a money saving measure the search will take place during the summer months with the new person hopefully starting in mid-August. If you are interested or know someone who might be interested, please contact Tracy Stebbins.

In the meantime, beginning June 1st the Nursery will be staffed by volunteers for the 10:30 service only. We regret any inconvenience for not covering the 8:00 service. Please notify Jay McCombs, rather than her spending hours on the phone, if you can keep the nursery during this volunteer time.

On to another topic of transition, there is a fair amount of tree work that must be done. Soon you will be seeing the removal of several trees. The pecan tree at the north side of the church has been taken down as it was damaging the church's foundation, sidewalk and hampering installation of our new sprinkler system. Its removal will benefit the nearby oak tree. In preparation for the Columbarium, the hollow pecan tree by the nursery and the crepe myrtles will be removed. New trees will be planted when construction is completed. This decision was reached after a presentation by Pam Collins and a lengthy discussion at the April 17th vestry meeting.

SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE from John Beal: The Search Committee has been busy the last couple of months. We will begin visiting prospective candidates very soon. Keep us in your prayers.

POOL NEWS From Jay McCombs: We will be cleaning the pool and the pool area May 4th in the morning. I would like to encourage anyone who uses the pool to help with this task. The more help, the merrier the slime and mess! Someone will be in the nursery so bring the kids. Call Jay McCombs at 324-8269 for more information.

MORE POOL NEWS - Don't forget the pool operates independently from the church budget and depends entirely on donations to survive! A family "membership fee" of $75 is suggested, and $40 for singles. If payment is a hardship, drop by the office to register. The pool is a ministry for all to enjoy. If your grandchildren or other guests come for a week and need a place to swim, please make a contribution you think is appropriate. Make your check out to Church of the Resurrection and mark it "pool fund". Drop it in the plate on Sunday or bring it by the office. Remember: Our rules are simple, but must be observed! No swimming alone. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Parishioners must accompany guests. No glass containers. Clean up after yourself and take trash home with you. And last one out lock the gate! Important reminder: Nelda's only responsibility with the pool is collecting checks and registrations. If you have questions or problems please contact the McCombs at 324-8269 or jmccombs@hotmail.com or Jennifer Damms at 338-9022.

ALTAR GUILD - Marsha Williams reports: As Chairperson of the Altar Guild, I would like to thank all of you who contributed to the "shower." Once I have finished purchasing needed items, our beautiful new Sacristy will be wonderfully equipped with towel holders, shelf lining, waste baskets, and all the comforts of a properly furnished sacristy. Thank you for helping to make this new space a joy in which to work.

SUNDAY SCHOOL NOTES From David Lewis: Sunday, May 19, Pentecost is the last of Sunday School. I would like to thank Jennifer Damms, Alyson Hardin, Gail Foote, Jay McCombs, Rachel McCann, Ellen and Michael Pearson, Glenn Cook, Jane Jenkins, Margaret King, and Kathy Brandon for teaching the children and Elizabeth Wheatley for teaching the adult class. It has been an inspirational year. The children and teachers have come together to produce banners and plays. Each month we had a theme which the groups explored. At the beginning of each month we met for a community service of singing and celebration of the month's activities. We are ending the year with an international theme where the children will be learning the Lord's Prayer in French.

CPR TRAINING - Tracy Stebbins will be teaching a class for those not certified or needing recertification in CPR. Everyone is encouraged to take the class, especially those who work with children and youth. Watch for details or contact Tracy Stebbins for more information.

MORE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES - We have immediate openings for New Member Ministry Coordinator and Birthday Sunday Coordinator. See James McCormick for details and/or to sign up!

BELATED THANKS from Mary Eleanor Anderson. A belated thank you... A sincere thank you to Kathy Brandon and her crew of workers for a job well done in planning and executing the lunch, and to the many hands that prepared scrumptious dishes for the potluck feast in celebration of our return to the renovated church and to welcome Bishop Marble. We had a great lunch and I am sure made a favorable impression on the Bishop with our hospitality.

SPRING BLOOD DRIVE - Many thanks to the following folks who made the Blood Drive a success: Slick Ables, David VanLandingham, Mike Vance, Chris Brown, Clark Callahan, Beth Callahan, Frank Switzer, Arleen Clapp, Jerry Williams, Hellen Polk, Carlton Polk, Dave Boles, Russell Gaines, Tyler Finklea, Cory Adams and Mary Lee Beal. The technicians who came from United Blood Services said they like to come to Resurrection because we are the nicest! Could that be because of our refreshments??? Thanks to Jean Little, Ann McVey and Marsha Williams for bringing goodies! The parish family at Resurrection is once again covered for blood needs for six months. If you or someone in your family receives blood, call United Blood Services at 1-800-880-2482 and tell them that you are covered by Resurrection in Starkville.

FAREWELL AND GODSPEED to Michael, Ellen, Jason and Laura Lee Pearson. Michael has accepted a job at the Mathematics Association of America on DuPont Circle in Washington, DC... to Murray and Bobbe Sue Bullock who are off to places and adventures yet to be revealed... and to Kathy and Steve Harris who are moving homeward to Alabama. We will miss you all and hope you come back to visit often!

CHRISTIAN SYMPATHY is extended to Marian and Chad Hughlett on the death of Marian's grandfather and Chad's grandfather. "Rest eternal grant them, O Father, and let light perpetual shine upon them." Pray for all who mourn.

YOUR PRAYERS ARE ASKED FOR... John Beal, LaVora Williams and Lorenzo Crowell as they undergo treatment, and for Debbie Nettles, Allison Russell and Melinda Gwin who are recovering from surgery.

SUMMARY OF APRIL VESTRY MEETING

  • Report from Pam Collins regarding tree removal and irrigation system. Approved her recommendation.
  • Report of special events and receptions past and coming.
