...at Episcopal Church of the Resurrection Starkville, Mississippi December, 2002 Dear Brothers and Sisters of Church of the Resurrection, As I write this entry to you and consider that I will be addressing the issue of Advent and Christmas, it frightens me how quickly my time with you has passed. Even more frightening is that experience has taught me how quickly the time from Thanksgiving and Christmas passes. During the liturgical year that ends November 30 of this calendar year, our Sunday lectionary Gospel has primarily come from Matthew. I emphasize this fact because Matthew, more than the other Gospels, contrasts the differences between the Kingdom of Heaven and the earthly kingdoms. Similarly, this time of year provides us a contrast between the Kingdom of Heaven and the earthly kingdom more than any other time of year. The earthly kingdom began its Christmas hype before October - with Walmart shelving its seasonal section with Christmas decorations starting in late September and many other stores starting soon after and Christmas decorations becoming visible in front yards and store fronts in the middle of November. The earthly kingdom allows us just enough time to practice our consumerism on Halloween decorations, costumes, and treats before the consumer frenzy of Christmas. Thanksgiving now seems almost invisible in between these two consumption events. Both the rush to redirect our spending and the emphasis on consumption of the earthly kingdom are contradictions to the foci of Kingdom of Heaven. As we come to the end of this year's Gospel readings from Matthew, the author draws our attention on the now - the now of the already and the not yet. Our readings hold in tension the awareness of the already: all that God has done through love - creating, calling us, sending prophets to us, living among us to reveal both the loving nature of God and what it is to be human. Our readings also hold in tension the awareness of the not yet, that God seeks to bring to fruition through the second coming of Christ the redemption of creation and the time when the kingdom on earth is as the Kingdom of Heaven. By tension, I do not mean conflict but suspension - in which we, in the now, are suspended between these two natures of God's love. Rather than rushing through the times of the already and the not yet, as our culture rushes from Halloween and Christmas, the Gospel invites us to experience the now, to experience the present. While the earthly kingdom in which we live literally lives or dies based on personal consumption - the fact that more people saving money due to financial anxiety jeopardizes our economy's future emphasizes its dependence on ever growing consumption. However, as we move through Advent toward Christmas, we will be reminded of our unity with all humanity and our responsibility to be concerned about our brothers and sisters next door and around the world. We will be reminded that we worship one who lived in the simplest of conditions to reveal God to us. As the earthly kingdom rushes through its secular Christmas consumption frenzy and the Church completes its season of waiting and preparation, perhaps we, the Church, have no better opportunity to view the struggle of being in the world but not of the world. As we enter Advent, as we anticipate both Christmas and the Second Coming, please take time for the now. Take time for your spouse; take time for your children; take time for your parents; take time for your neighbor; take time for yourself. For most of those relationships, an hour of being present - listening, sharing, holding, caring - will be the best gift you could give. May the Light that came into the world some two thousand years ago shine brightly into your hearts! Christ's
Peace,
