October, 2003

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Preacher of the Book of Ecclesiastes tells us:

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

a time to be born, and a time to die;

a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;

a time to kill, and a time to heal;

a time to break down, and a time to build up;

a time to weep, and a time to laugh;

a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;

a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

a time to seek, and a time to lose;

a time to keep, and a time to throw away;

a time to tear, and a time to sew;

a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

a time to love, and a time to hate;a time for war, and a time for peace. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, NRSV).

This awareness of season, of change, of the appropriateness of the timing of significant events, of death preceding new life, and of contrasting emotions in these changes is well evident at this time at the Church of the Resurrection. The long hot days of summer grow shorter as we waken to an occasional cool morning, letting us know fall -- both by calendar and in reality -- is not far away. MSU students -- both those returning and those new on campus -- have appeared in our midst. While it may soon wane if MSU's winning record doesn't improve, home-game weekends exude excitement as fans crowd into town.

We experience this sense of season as we send Elizabeth Wheatley to the Diocese of Arkansas. Since July 1999 when she came to Resurrection as a new seminary graduate, transitional-Deacon, Elizabeth has transitioned into an experienced, capable Priest and Chaplain to Canterbury. Under her guidance, Canterbury and Resurrection have become more intertwined than they have ever been. MSU students are regular worshippers at our Sunday Eucharist and participants in the choir and other ministries of the parish. Resurrection actively supports Canterbury by welcoming and including the students in the life of the parish and serving meals before the Wednesday Canterbury Eucharist. Through her efforts, Canterbury Lodge -- a place for students to hold worship and special events and to simply gather for social time and relaxation -- not only became a parish dream but is now a reality.

However, as the Preacher tells us, for everything there is a season. And so, Elizabeth now continues her priestly call in a new ministry and new location. Our prayers and hopes for her future ministry go with her, and Resurrection and Canterbury enter into discernment as to how to best continue our shared journey.

How fitting that on Sunday, October 12, we simultaneously celebrate completions and new beginnings. With Bishop Gray officiating, we will dedicate the Canterbury Lodge, dedicate the Columbarium, and celebrate with Elizabeth in her Service for Leave-taking. Let us celebrate that in God's creation, for everything there is a season and that some occasions are simultaneously a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.

Christ's Peace,

NEWS & EVENTS

October, 2003 Newsletter

EYC News

EYC is off to a great start this fall!!! In the next few weeks, EYC will be in hosting a slew of fundraisers to assist with the Habitat for Humanity Apostles' House. On October 4th we will host Garage Sale (see "Garage Sale note for details). Plus… Be Alert for other roving, fundraising surprises! In other areas, we had a handful of youth in attendance at Sr-Hi DOY; and on a Convocational level, keep your eyes peeled for info about upcoming events! Questions: Call Jessica Callahan, 312-3119.

Children's Christian Education

Children's Christian Education is up and running. Thank you to Kathy Brandon, Laura Lamb, and Margaret King for volunteering to be directors of the three younger age groups. The 7th thru 12th grades are meeting with the adults until the end of October. We have volunteers for the most popular part of Christian Education: "SNACK TIME." The schedule of servers will be published in November.

Canterbury

CANTERBURY welcomes a new crew of advocates and supporters in the form of the Canterbury Advisory Council, which is made up of a handful of parishioners and a handful of students. The parishioner CAC members include Tom & Sue Bell, Linda Cox, and David Lewis. And the student members include Hunter Butler, Rachel Cox, Watson Lamb, and Ginny Powell with two ex-officio student members, Joshua Andrews and John Talbert. Under the guidance of the chaplain (or interim chaplain) and rector, the CAC will function somewhat like a vestry for the Canterbury program. They will help with the day to day functioning, the vision-work and development of programs, and the bridge-building between parishioners and students and church and university.

In this time of transition, their presence as leaders will be very valuable in maintaining our Canterbury momentum, but they can not do it alone. Your presence and involvement are much needed. Please contact our new CAC members to offer your support. Elizabeth's presence has helped us get off to a grand start and she will be missed, but now is the time for all of us to pick up and keep forging ahead in the frontier of campus and young adult mission and ministries!

Some of the concrete ways you can offer support along the way include providing a meal, attending to the building and grounds of Canterbury Lodge, publicizing AND attending Canterbury gathering and events, getting to know students and inviting them to join you and your family for meals and festivities, hosting a Canterbury gathering, and welcoming students on Sunday mornings! Always you are invited and welcome to join Canterbury at any of our weekly gatherings: Mondays at 8 pm for Canterbury Reflections; Wednesdays at 12:05 pm for Noonday Prayers at the MSU Chapel of Memories, at 6 pm for Canterbury Dinner in the Canterbury Lodge, and at 7 pm for Holy Eucharist in the Lodge Chapel.

September 15 Vestry Notes

After an opening devotion, Sherry VanLandingham gave a columbarium report.

Old business: Marsha Williams reported the Audit Committee is currently completing the 2002 audit. David Lewis reported that we are having over 20 children regularly attending Sunday School, and Bill Livingston reported we have had over 30 attending the "Beyond Our Walls" series. Bill reported the stewardship gatherings begin Sept. 25 and the ingathering celebration will be Nov. 13 and liturgy on Nov. 16. Elizabeth reported that the Canterbury Advisory Committee has met with plans to add a few more members. The Vestry approved a long-range plan to recruit a replacement for Elizabeth Wheatley and an interim plan for Diane Livingston to serve as part-time chaplain until a new full-time chaplain is hired. This plan will be submitted to the Bishop. The date for Kevin Martin's consultation for the 2004 retreat was set for January 16-18. The blessing of the Canterbury Lodge and the columbarium and Elizabeth's Service of Leave-taking is set for 5:00 p.m., Oct. 12. The proposed new telephone system was approved.

New business: Mary Eleanor Anderson gave a progress report on the Capital Campaign. Some pledge payments have not been received, and she is requesting them. The cost of the Alice Franks Sacristy construction has been fully paid by a combination of Alice's living trust, memorial gifts, and gifts from her family. We will use these funds and pledge payments to reduce the current loan and restructure the payment schedule to reduce the monthly payments. Bill reported of planned efforts to have a Young Adult Group start that will meet monthly - probably in a supper club format. With Nelda's announced plans to retire at the end of the year, a committee was appointed to develop a new job description and establish a recruitment plan. Ordering 14 new pairs of acolyte gloves was approved. Mary Eleanor will approach the ECW about purchasing these. Michael Fazio submitted a proposal for final painting and the allocation of funds to pay for this was approved. Bill reported that Leigh Jensen will be leading a "Sexual Misconduct Prevention" workshop on Oct. 4 at St. Paul's, Columbus. Vestry members are encouraged to attend. David Lewis will seek to have someone from the Christian Education Committee to attend.

Housekeeping: The Aug. 18 minutes were approved and the August financial report accepted. Dolton McAlpin reported on the swimming pool. The leak cannot be identified. Except for the pump replacement which was paid for from previous years pool revenue, the pool income and donations covered all but $38 of 2003 pool expenses. Bill dismissed the meeting with prayer and blessing.

Garage Sale

THE EYC NEEDS YOUR HELP: Please clean out the "treasures" in your attic now for our Garage Sale on October 4th at Resurrection. We will be collecting items of all sorts at the Canterbury Lodge up until midnight on October 3rd. All Garage Sale proceeds will go to benefit the Habitat for Humanity Apostles' House. For more information please contact Jessica Callahan.

Music Notes

The Adult Choir started the year off with a fish fry on August 27. A big THANK YOU to Tom Bell - our fish catcher & cooker, to Mary Sears' son, Napoleon - who donated fish, to Fred Hansford who made and cooked hush puppies, to William Pepper who helped with the cooking, and to Joey Hansford who assisted the cooks.

At the fish fry, the choir honored Jan and Tom Handy, who after many years of faithful and joyful service, have retired from the choir. Last May the choir honored Beth Callahan at a cookout and Katy Wright and Mary Sears at a luncheon. All three of these members have moved away (although we are happy to report that Mary has returned to us from her "sabbatical.") We miss the Handys, Beth and Katy and wish them happiness!

New faces and voices have joined us this fall! We have welcomed Clarissa Balbalian, Kate Boehim, Gracie Cox, Brook Herman, Ruby Licona, and William Pepper.

Annual Choir Retreat was held the weekend of September 12-13 at the Canterbury Lodge. Dr. Bob Damm of the MSU Music Department joined Bill and Elizabeth in leading us on a musically enhanced spiritual journey.

After a Parent's Information luncheon and pool party in August, our Children's Choir started rehearsals on September 7. A total of nine children make up this talented and enthusiastic group. Gracie Cox has been attending rehearsals and helping us organizationally and vocally. Our fall schedule for singing includes the leave-taking/Dedication service at 5:00 p.m. on October 12; 10:30 Holy Eucharist sometime in November; and Lessons and Carols at 5:00 p.m. on December 7.

Brotherhood of St. Andrew

Our Diocese offers support to assist local chapters of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. The Brotherhood is an organization centered around the three disciplines of prayer, study and service. Anyone interested in being part of getting a chapter going at Resurrection, please contact Fr. Bill.

Is Resurrection in Your Will?

This is both an acknowledgment of gratitude and a request. Through her forethought and generosity, Alice Franks established a living trust with the proceeds to be given to Resurrection. With the income we have received from her trust and with memorial gifts and gifts from her family, we have fully funded the cost of the construction of the Alice Franks Sacristy. By this means, we gratefully acknowledge Alice's generosity. We also use this time to ask you to consider including Resurrection in your will or to establish a living trust. Depending how you establish the trust, it can be structured in such a way that you have guaranteed income while at the same time receiving the tax benefit of the gift. If you are interested in learning more about this, let Fr. Bill know.

Looking Beyond Our Walls…

Our Adult Sunday School program focused on opening our eyes to the needs of the greater community continues over the month of October. Join us as we become aware about the mission and ministries of …

…Helping Hands (October 5),

…Episcopal Relief and Development (October 12th),

…Honduras Building Mission (October 19th),

…and other local needs and how we can get involved (October 27th).

Oblation bearers needed

Please sign the list in the Narthex to help with this ministry. Pick a Sunday that is of significance to you (or not). November and December are waiting for your name!

Young Adult's Potluck Supper Club

Saturday, October 18 will be the first meeting of the Young Adults' Potluck Supper Club. If you are in your 20's or 30's please join us in the Canterbury Lodge at 7;00 p.m. Childcare will be provided in the church nursery. Please call Laura Lamb at 263-5142 to sign up for potluck and to register your child in the nursery. Come ready to have fun ad to get to know some of the other young adults in your church.

Blessing of the Animals

The feast day of St. Francis of Assisi is October 4th, so come and celebrate the Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 5 at 5:00 p.m. in the church parking lot. Bring your pets, large and small, in a cage or on a leash please! If you have a pet that died over this past year, let us know so we can include them in the prayers. Also, please bring offerings for the local Humane Society. (Needs include: bleach, spray bottles, paper towels, disposable gloves, dog collars and leashes, topical flea control products, and used towels & blankets for winter months, but no food, please.) Invite friends to come and bring their pets… All Creatures Great and Small!

Eve of All Saints' Sunday Service Commemorating the Departed

On Saturday, November 1, we will offer a service which commemorates the dead. This 30 minute candlelight service allows us to reflectively remember those who have died as we prepare to celebrate All Saints' Sunday. Those who attend will be invited to list names of the departed which will be read during the prayers and to bring pictures or memorabilia to be displayed during the worship. This service offers an excellent opportunity to experience how the beauty of our liturgy also serves us pastorally. Please come and invite non-Episcopalians whom you know who would like to somehow remember a departed love one, especially someone who has had a loved one die during the past year or who continues to actively grieve. The service will be promoted by Heart to Heart Hospice and invitations will be sent to the local funeral homes.

St. Joseph's Guild

Since our stained glass has been back in place for some time, everyone may have assumed that the work was finished, but it was not. Now that the sash and frames have been painted, Pearl River Glass has installed protective plate glass all the way around the church building. It is beautiful work, so take the time to admire it if you think about it.

David Lewis continues work on the labyrinth where the Columbarium and brick patio and accompanying landscaping are now complete. There is still a walkway and ramp to be built and more landscaping to come. Helping David have been James McCormick, David Callahan, W.F. Wheatley, Warnie Kennington, Bill and Beth Batson, David Foote, Elizabeth Wheatley, John Beal, Alex and Adrian Lewis, and Babs Deas. Also nearby, the failed handrail at the base of the steps leading to the parish hall has been removed and reinstalled.

Pam Collins continues her good work on the front bank and lawn. Peyton Passons and Leigh Jensen have spread a mountain of mulch and Peyton and Gretchen Passons have been attacking the weeds on the front bank, particularly the virtually indestructible nut grass.

Please cheer on all these people!

Come Celebrate on October 12th

Join us on Sunday, October 12th at 5:00 pm under the leadership of Bishop Gray as we gather in celebration to dedicate the Canterbury Lodge, to dedicate the Columbarium and to observe a service of leave-taking with Elizabeth Wheatley as she prepares to move to her new position at Trinity Cathedral in Little Rock, Arkansas. At 5 pm we will gather in front of the Canterbury Lodge and wind our way about the property with our final destination being a gathering in the nave for the Celebration of leave-taking culminating with Holy Communion.
