...at Episcopal Church of the Resurrection
Starkville, Mississippi

July, 2005

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I had full intention of writing a typical opening entry to our parish newsletter. However, as the due date came to submit something to Sandra for publication, my appointment calendar became more full and my work schedule more chaotic. As I will be absent from June 27 to July 14, I could not delay the preparation time. As Diane will be with me June 27 - July 5, I could not assign the newsletter entry to her, nor to Brian, as he has just returned from vacation. All that is to say I will be very brief. Yes, I know some rejoice in this and that due to the brevity, others may read my entry for the first time.

When you receive this, I will be in Estes Park, Colorado. From June 27 - July 5, Diane and I have scheduled some much needed sabbath time at a cabin at the entry to the Rocky Mountain National Park. I will use this time for prayerful rest, hiking, personal reading and preparation reading and work for the conference that will follow my week of vacation.

From July 5 - 14 I will be at a conference on congregational and clergy development held at a monastery just outside of Estes Park. The focus of this conference will be on how congregations and clergy can best live into the mission of being the Church in our post-modern culture. The content will include having stronger lay leadership, reaching out to the unchurched in a pluralistic and politically and religiously divided environment and healthy congregation and clergy partnerships.

The conference is offered by the Alban Institute (Washington, D.C.), a leading institution on congregational development, with Roy Oswald, a well published author in this field serving as the lead trainer. I am fortunate enough to participate through a grant from Mid-South Ministries and financial support from the diocesan Congregational Development Committee which I chair. This financial aid, the budgeted parish continuing education funds, along with personal funds enables me to participate in this quality study.

During my absence, I ask your prayers that my week of vacation will be a time of restoration and that my time of study will offer insight, knowledge and skill that will serve Resurrection and me as we continue to seek to bring about God's kingdom into our community. You will be in my prayers as I have time for more focused and purposeful prayer and reflection.

While I am gone, Brian will respond to any pastoral needs.

Christ's Peace,

Mid-Summer Fun!

Let's have a cookout! Wednesday, July 20th we'll gather at the pool for fun, friendship and good eating. The festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m. and cooking will commence soon thereafter. Feel free to arrive earlier for additional sun and pool time.

Tables will be set up, and we'll provide ice and condiments. Bring your own lawn chairs, drinks, something for the grill (buns if needed), and a dish to share. Please contact David Evans if you can help with set up, clean up, etc. (work 325-2796, home 320-6774, or dle@sitl.cfr.msstate.edu). Hope we see you there!

Music Notes

Hymn Lottery

Winners of the lottery to date are posted in the narthex next to the fishbowl.

Choir Chair Project

The count is up to nineteen. Three more chairs and we will have all of the twenty-two chairs we have ordered paid for. Thank you!

Summer Choir

Give the "regular" choir a much- needed and deserved break -- come at 10:00 a.m. some Sunday to sing through the service music and then sit in the choir loft for the 10:30 a.m. Eucharist.

Music Leadership...

...at 10:30 a.m. during the summer includes Rachel McCann, who is cantor/guitarist, and James McCormick, who is playing the autoharp for the two Sundays Rachel will be out during the summer.

Face to Face

FACE to FACE, the 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening service (which now begins at 6:00 p.m.) continues to be moved and inspired by the voice and guitar of Rachel McCann, and by the percussion playing of Dolton McAlpin.

FAQs

Why Drumming During The Service? Next to the voice, the drum is the oldest instrument and has played a part in worship since the beginning of organized religion.

Why Do We Sing at Communion? The entire congregation is invited to sing at Communion. Why? To publicly manifest the emotions of our heart and to emphasize that we are not doing an individual act alone . . . that in the Procession we are acting in the name of the whole church.

El Salvador Mission Trip Being Planned

Plans continue for our parish to send a mission team to El Salvador next May. If you think you may be interested in participating in a very hands on project that also allows you to get to know some of our brothers and sisters in El Salvador, please call Diane Livingston right away (615-0956). All who are interested will receive notice of a meeting in the near future so be certain that Diane has your name, even if you just want more information before making a decision.

Food Pantry / Safe Haven

Requested items to share with those in need during the month of July are RICE (any type and any size container) and DISPOSABLE RAZORS. These items go to area food pantries and to Safe Haven, a domestic violence shelter. Thanks to so many who continue to be faithful about shopping for these needs every month. If you have children or grandchildren, talk with them as you shop about what you are doing and why. As you model generosity in this and other ways, you help plant the seeds for how they will share when they are adults.

Canterbury Notes

RUMMAGE SALE THANKS

A big thank you goes out to all who donated items for the Canterbury Rummage Sale. We had a really good turn-out of buyers looking for some great bargains on the morning of Saturday, June 4, enabling us to raise a little over $500!! The monies will be divided and earmarked for mission/service and a reserve fund for future Canterbury Lodge maintenance needs. Your generosity and support are very much appreciated!! Please start collecting NOW for what we hope will become the Canterbury ANNUAL Rummage Sale to be held in 2006!

Thanks again for your support and assistance in this worthwhile endeavor!

CANTERBURY CONTINUES …

throughout the summer while school is in session. We meet on Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. in the Canterbury Lodge for food, fun, fellowship and worship. Bring a friend!

Help Wanted

Volunteers! Young or old, male or female, married or single, but definitely having a love for young people. To teach some of the most adorable, loving, cute, intelligent, charming, attentive, and direly needful children in the state of Mississippi. Sunday School, or, as it perhaps may be, Wednesday School.

Your chance to fill one of the great needs of our parish - the filling of the minds of our children with Christian Education. If you think you can't do it - think again. If you think someone else will do it - think again. We need you, we want you, and the children beg you to teach them. Give it a try.

To apply or for more information, please contact Guy Hargrove by telephone at 323-6941 or by email at hargrovegn@bellsouth.net.

Young Adult Group Plans Summer Events

AWARENESS MEETING
for Young Adults (and the young at heart!)

Anything interesting going on this summer? Any political or environmental news you'd like to share? Had a revelation lately? Come to the Cold Stone Creamery Sat. July 2nd at 4 o'clock p.m. and share the latest and greatest!

Bring your ideas for some social activities geared towards Young Adults and let's get to know each other….or at least share in the love of ice cream!

PLAYGROUP Update

The June Saturday Playgroup was a success. Four lovely children with their lovely parents came out for an hour of play, and it was a great time for all. This is an excellent opportunity for our children to socialize and for us to share our parenting experiences with each other.

Please, remember our next playgroup is Saturday, July 16th, at 9:00 a.m. at McKee Park. We hope you can make it! Also, Young Adults who are interested in hanging out with the children and their parents...we welcome you to come out and enjoy the company!

Note: For more information on either event, please contact Emily Easterling by phone at 418-5421 or email her at emily.easterling@gmail.com.

EYC Summer Plans

NEW EYC LEADERSHIP ANNOUNCED

Carey Price, an MSU Student who has worked with our EYC youth as a volunteer leader for several years, has been hired to take on responsibilities as the parish's EYC coordinator! He officially begins his duties this month.

Carey grew up in Vicksburg and is a rising junior in engineering at State. He has been very much involved in Canterbury during his time in Starkville, as well as having an extensive history with participation and leadership in diocesan youth programming and events. He continues to be a wonderfully valuable asset to our parish community in this new capacity.

Help us welcome Carey into his new role as coordinator by introducing yourselves when you see him around the parish! Welcome, Carey!

TOMBIGBEE YOUTH ELECTION GATHERING

Resurrection will host a Saturday session to elect a delegate and an alternate to represent the youth of the Tombigbee Convocation to the Special Diocesan Council scheduled for October. This election gathering will take place on Saturday, August 13, beginning at 10:30 a.m. All parish youth in junior and senior high school should plan to attend!

This is an important opportunity to discuss some important issues our Church and diocese are facing, as well as providing a wonderful time to get-to-know others from surrounding churches.

Our EYC will assist with games and activities, and a lunch will be provided. Also, the pool will most assuredly be open (weather permitting)! So make plans NOW to attend! For more information, contact Brian in the parish office.

JULY 4th EVENT

A special summer EYC gathering scheduled for July 4 is being planned! For more information, contact Carey Price at cdanprice@yahoo.com or (601) 529-2166.

TENT EVENT, TOO!

The announcement under "Canterbury Notes" concerning the Bishop's Tent Event applies to parish youth, too! All interested youth in junior and senior high school are encouraged to attend both the concert and the Tent Event on August 19-20 at Gray Center. Please contact Brian for more information, or to express your interest!
