Week 2 - Sent in Power
» WEEK 2 - SENT IN POWER
As with any journey, pace is key to perseverance. Too slow and some people will begin to wonder. Too fast and some will get tired before they reach the end. This week your goal is to continue setting a healthy pace for your group. We want to slow down from the previous series but hold course and keep moving forward.
So for the first few weeks, we'll have a similar cadence starting out. At times it may seem redundant. But, our desire is a good one. We want to encourage our family to be living in God's Word and finding joy in His commands. As David reveals in Psalm 19:8, "The commandments of the LORD are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are clear, giving insight for living." (NLT)
By having a debrief time in the beginning you're creating a high value on studying the Bible. Then, by having everyone read the text quietly and audibly you're helping your group hear from God. You're teaching them to be informed by the Word prior to moving into the application. Though some may be slow to engage, our desire is to help people experience the joy and the work God can do in and through us when we are rooted in the living Word (Heb 4:12).
As we venture out this week, my prayer is that our people would grow in trusting and treasuring the Word of God and would help others to do the same. Know that I am praying for you and your groups each week. If you have any specific ways that I can be praying please let me know. Love ya!
» BIBLE STUDY + DISCUSSION
(approx. time: 25 minutes)
Prayer - Allow time for the group to fill out a prayer card. Consider having someone pray over those requests and for your group as you begin.
Debrief - Invite the group to share what God is revealing to them through their time in the Word. Doing this regularly helps provide accountability, encouragement and a co-learning environment. If you find that people are not participating yet, it may be helpful to go through a devotional as a group; e.g. Acts 2:5-13 on pg 24.
(approx. time: 45 minutes)
Bible - Have the group read Acts 2:1-21 quietly. Then have 1-2 people read it out loud for the group. Doing so invites each person to read God’s Word themselves and can help to create a culture where each person is guided and informed by God’s truth.
Summary - (Here is an example. Feel free to modify it and make it your own.)
So we are now covering the day of Pentecost, also known as the Feast of Harvest. This is about 50 days after the Passover and just as Jesus promised the Holy Spirit has come to indwell his followers. They are now empowered with the Spirit to live on mission.
Within this time we also see ways in which God is pointing back to the Old Testament. He reverses the curse placed on those at the tower Babel (Gen. 11:6-9) and there is the symbol of fire which in the Old Testament represents God’s presence. It also symbolized holiness and purity (Ex. 3:2; 19:18; Isa. 4:5). So now God is not only among His people but is now present within them. And just like these early Christians, the Holy Spirit empowers us for three things; for Salvation, Sanctification and for Mission.
Discussion Questions -
So in thinking through this passage and the sermon, in what ways have you been relying on your own strength rather than the empowerment of the Holy Spirit?
Are there any distortions or lies you have been believing about the Holy Spirit? If so, how have they affected you living out God’s mission?
How will you trust and relying on the Spirit to live on God’s mission this week?
(approx. time: 5 minutes)
Vision Cast - (Here is an example of how to summarize the topic this week and connect it to next week's gathering. Feel free to modify it and make it your own.)
"As I mentioned last week, our goal through this series and in our time together is to become better aligned with God’s will for our lives. We do this being in the Word regularly and spending time in prayer. As well we on not on this journey alone. God has given us the Holy Spirit to empower us and he has given us each other. We are here to help one another grow in Christlikeness. As Hebrews 10:24 says, we also want to consider how to stir one another up to love and good works. That is what discipleship is all about. I just want to thank you guys for being here and being dedicated to helping one another live for Jesus.
For next week, it will be pretty similar. We'll share what God is teaching us through our devotional time and work through some questions. The week after, though, we will be doing an activity together which will involve sharing testimonies. Now as we close I want to remind you that if you are in Christ you have the same Holy Spirit in you that rose Jesus from the dead. The same Spirit that hovered the waters in Genesis and empowered the apostles for the work of ministry. Now let's close our time in prayer".
This week, in addition to the prayer cards, I also included a brief study on the Holy Spirit. Feel free to use this as a guide for your own study.
